From Elpais.comKing Juan Carlos I. When Franco died, the king discontinued the authoritarian state of Spain which greatly angered Franco supporters like Lieutenant Tejero. Tejero interrupted a meeting at the Congress of the Deputies in Madrid in 1981 and held hostages. The next day, the king appeared on television in his military uniform and declared that Spain would transition to a democracy. Tejero and his men surrendered.
